Rimu Walk
Rimu Walk - This track loops off the Mangawhero Forest Walk at the south gate of the Tongariro National Park World Heritage Site. It meanders gently through an understorey of ground ferns and kamahi and crisscrosses a quiet mountain stream. The Rimu walk takes 15 minutes and is suitable for prams and wheelchairs.
The Mangawhero Forest Walk - This track takes you deeper into the magnificent podocarp (native pine) forest surrounding the Rimu Walk. It starts by crossing the Mangawhero River from which it gains its name. From the river the track leads into a forest of kamahi, broadleaf and five finger, with giant rimu, matai and kahikatea trees reaching thirty metres or more above the forest floor. Allow 1 to 1½ hours. The Mangawhero river starts high up on Mount Ruapehu and descends over two giant waterfalls, carving its way through the debris of previous eruptions. Following a faultline down the mountain the Mangawhero eventually joins the mighty Whangaehu River. For more walks in the Ohakune area please see here.
